Hawkesyard Estate Golf Course (formerly St Thomas’s Priory Golf Course) is an 18-hole parkland championship course with ancient woodland and lakes built by Dominican Monks in 19th century. Many varieties of wildlife can be found within the boundaries of the course, providing the perfect backdrop to a stunning golf course which will tempt you back, again and again.
Just a short drive from Lichfield, Stafford, Cannock and Rugeley the course is built on sandstone which allows the land to drain freely for all year round play.
The course offers fantastic character with not one hole mirroring another. The famous 8th green with its three tier plateaus followed by the “Troon” style 9th par 3 will leave you wanting more as you stop off at Bar 19 for a well deserved refreshment break.
Moving onto the back nine, the course really shows its teeth. The towering oaks and twisting fairways prove an enjoyable test for any golfer. As you approach the thirteenth just pause and you’re suddenly met with the striking views over Staffordshire, reaching as far as Ashbourne. The well known 601 yard par 5 14th hole descends you back down into the heart of the course before making your way to our signature hole, the 18th! Stood on the last tee, it’s difficult not to be swallowed up by the stretching lakes built by the Dominican Monks. If you make the 130yard carry across the first pool, you find yourself in prime position to attack the green. Depending on whether you reach the first or second fairway plateau determines what you have in your hand for your second shot. Come up short, and you’ll need to pull a long iron or even a wood out of your bag. Nail your drive and you can happily grab a short iron or a wedge, but, give the last green the respect it deserves, as a wayward shot will find sand and you don’t want to be trapped in there with a full terrace of drinkers looking on from the 19th.
